size guide

A last is the mold that gives your boots their shape and determines how they fit around your foot. Each Nicks last has a different combination of arch support, toe shape, and toe-box width, so choosing the right one helps you customize your boots for your feet and how you plan to wear them.

Mismates are a pair of boots made in two different sizes to accommodate feet that differ in length, width, or both. They can provide a more precise fit when one foot is noticeably different from the other. Not applicable for 99% of customers.
The outsole is the part of the boot that meets the ground, affecting traction, durability, and comfort. Different outsoles are designed for different terrains, work environments, and everyday wear.

A relief cut is a notch in the leather at the ankle that allows the boot to flex more naturally and reduces pressure or pinching during break-in. It’s a great option if you want increased flexibility and comfort, especially with stiff leathers.

The Nicks team knocked this pair of boots out of the park! From the Customer Service Team handling a few changes on my end regarding sizing and the leather, to the boot makers nailing the build with the fit and finishing being on point. One of my favorite pairs from Nicks, I look forward to wearing these for many many years!
I'm a big fan of Nicks Boots and this is not my first pair of Roberts. However, compared to my others, the craftmanship on this most recent pair was not to the same caliber. Specifically, the sanding of the outsoles/heels appears sloppy and unrefined. The distance between the outsole stitching and the edge of the outsole is far too wide and should have been sanded more (especially instep thru heel). Frankly surprised they got through the QC process. I would have sent the maker back to the drum sander for additional refinement before shipping.
Great well built boot! Nicks makes the best PNW boot out there!
The sizing was spot on and they felt great right out of the box. The MS black is very stiff but that plus the arch makes standing/walking all day comfortable. The only reason I even wear my other boots is so that this one can rest/dry so it can last even longer
This boot is amazing! Great fit and craftsmanship. The leather is beautiful and durable. The sizing chart was correct so I had no problems. I love them!
I ordered these Nick’s Boots back in July and they showed up in December—which, frankly, feels appropriate, because masterpieces should take time and also teach patience. What arrived was a pair of 8" Roberts on the 55 standard last, Italian Brown Cypress leather, soft toe, 430 mini outsole, size 10 EE (for reference, I’m a 10.5 E Brannock, aka “in-between-footed”). These boots fit like they were made by someone who knows my feet better than I do.
First impression: heft. These boots don’t just sit on the floor—they occupy it. You don’t put them on so much as you suit up. I own Truman, Grant Stone, Craft & Glory, Thursday, and Timberland boots, and Nick’s easily takes the crown for construction quality. These feel less like footwear and more like structural components.
Despite looking like they could survive a small meteor strike, the break-in was surprisingly easy. The gusseted tongue hugs your leg like it’s emotionally invested in your safety. Once laced up, your foot isn’t going anywhere—not out, not sideways, not into bad life decisions.
The heel is over 1.5 inches, which means I’m taller now. Not emotionally—physically. I don’t know what to do with this power, but I like it. Eye contact has changed. Shelves seem closer.
The Italian Brown Cypress leather arrived more matte than shiny, but after break-in it’s developing a gorgeous luster. Turns out, for this leather, patina = shine. It’s supple yet thick and tough, like it’s flexible by choice, not necessity. It feels expensive because it is expensive—nearly $700—and somehow, painfully, worth every single dollar.
I’m from Seattle, so I’m extra proud to support a PNW company out of Spokane that still does things the hard, correct, borderline obsessive way. At some point I will visit their flagship store. I don’t know when, but it will happen. My wife and kids already think I spend too much time, money, and emotional energy on boots, so what’s one pilgrimage more?
Would I recommend Nick’s Boots? Absolutely. To anyone. Including myself again in the future. I’m currently eyeing the Parkhurst in Black CXL, but my budget has stepped in like a responsible adult and said, “No.”
In summary:
These boots are heavy, beautiful, indestructible, surprisingly comfortable, and make me feel taller and more confident while simultaneously reminding me I have a boot problem. Five stars. No notes.
This might be the most perfect service boot, its build quality is just insane. You can definitely dress it up and down!
Was wanting a nice casual boot that gave me all day comfort like my builder pro work boots. Been eyeing them for a decade, but really tough to justify spending this much money on myself. These boots are super nice, I’m still getting them broke in, but can tell they are gonna be great. Pictures don’t give them justice, they are obviously built by prideful craftsmen. Money well spent, not a single regret, except waiting so long to purchase them
When you first open the box you can tell the craftsmanship is at a completely different level compared to others. Very comfortable out of the box and became my favorite boot after only one wear.
Gorgeous boots 5/5. Incredibly sturdy and the double stuffed burgundy is nice. Some of them blue ones might be next in a couple years
Great looking boot, well constructed.
These boots are top notch quality and fit! I could not be more happy. Thanks!!
Best heritage 55 last build.
Mine fit like a glove. Usually wear Brannock 9.5 D, Nicks 9D fit me flawlessly. I chose Italian Brown Cypress and they are stunning right out of the box and getting better patina every time I wear them. IBC can scratch a bit but brushes out and shines without much effort. I chose Dr. Sole half soles and I am very happy with that choice. I wear my Roberts 8 hours a day in complete comfort and when I take them off at the end of the day I stare at them in admiration of the fine work that was put into them.
Great boot. Still getting broken in but can allready tell these are going to be worn alot
The quality is beyond par and I can say without a doubt the best pair of boots I have ever had. They just screams quality and I plan on buying the same style, but in a different color. Thank you. thank you. Nicks are number one in boot making period, so if you want quality made boots,Nicks can make them for you. step up to Nick’s.
Used the online sizing tool, fit is perfect. The make, the last, the leather, these are the best bootsI’ve put on my feet. The communication with Nick’s was also great.
Bonus: they landed on my doorstep Christmas Eve!
I second everything said in the other reviews before mine. Couldn't be happier. I've owned by boots for 18 months now and love them. The most surprising thing to me was the break-in period. I was determined to break them in quickly, but after the second night of walking the dog, they were very comfortable and only got better with time and wear.
The heel is noticeable when you first put them on, but when you go to put on flatter boots your feet will sigh in a slightly negative tone. I wear a size 10 in Red Wings and got the same size in these and it was perfect. Now I'm back on this site looking to buy another pair.
Great boots, great craftsmanship. Proud to be an American walking around in American made boots.
I have been wearing these almost daily for a year now. I rarely wear anything other than boots. I have tried many different brands, including some of the competition located near Nick's in Spokane. These are by far the best boots I have worn. The fit is great (I was measured by a local cobbler where I placed the order for these boots). Based on those measurements I dropped half a size and went one size wider. My "normal" size is 10D. We ordered the 9.5E and the fit is great. After a long wait, well worth it, I received my new Robert boots in December 2022. I wasn't able to wear them much for the first couple months due to snow on the ground and cold temperatures here in Montana. I didn't want to break them in during cold weather like that. There is a break-in period with these, but once they are, they are extremely comfortable. These boots look nice enough to wear to the office, are tough enough to hold up outdoors, and keep your feet comfortable standing on concrete for hours on end. Don't let the price discourage you. These are worth every penny, and when you wear out the soles, those can be replaced. Look at these as a lifetime investment. My only, albeit very minor, gripe is the heritage sole on these. The soles don't have much for traction, especially when wet. This is okay for the office or dry concrete. Be cautious on the slick stuff or if you wear these riding a motorcycle. There not as bad as leather soled boots, but certainly not a lug sole. There's an easy fix for that though. I liked these boots so much, that I am writing this review right after I clicked the order button for another pair. This time I went with their Shrunken Bison - Work - Build Your Own and I expect them to be every bit as good as this Robert boot has been for me.
Look, I have a lot of boots. I've owned a few pairs of White's and multiple pairs of Red Wings. With great boots to be honest. That being said? My first pair of Nick's were a Robert in Brown Waxed Flesh. Not only were they the most durable and robust boots I'd ever wore? The finishing was nearly flawless. Much more refined than the whites and every but as durable if not more so. Plus they were beautiful. I went on to get a pair of Falcons in Tan Waxed Flesh and I love those too. If you're looking for the best boot money can buy? Go with Nicks.
I have come to properly constructed footwear late in life, but these beauties take properly constructed to a new level. And they fit, too. Worth the money, worth the wait, just gorgeous. And did I mention the smell? Yum.
This boot is the real deal. I bought it to last the rest of my life, and I have no doubts it will. I use mine in where half the day is spent in the office, and the other is spent outdoors. I'm not hesitant to do real work in them, while also feel confident in the office that I'm not wearing workbooks in a business casual setting. Definitely recommend!
before owning a pair of Nicks i thought that the best boots were RedWing, and boy was i wrong. If you decide to not go the fitting route which is what my wife did when she ordered these for me do red the sizing info they provide. Quality is amazing the leather is nice and tough. These will be my life time boot. Originally purchased to wear to work at the office and shop floor, but they are so nice looking they will be my going out boots. Support an American Company i purchase a pair of Nicks. I hope that one day they open i store front In Portland, Oregon at which point i will get custom fitted and purchase a pair of 10" boots.
I really love these boots. I previously owned a pair of White's Semi Dress that were built on the 55 last. The fit was sloppy. I called and emailed Nicks to ask if their 55 last was any different. They claimed it was identical. Knowing how sloppy my White's fit, I took the gamble and went with the same size as my White's. The difference was night and day. The instep, arch, heel were all in place. They have a saying in the cowboy boot community, you want your boots to feel like a firm handshake and that is exactly what these boots do. Nicks have found a new loyal customer with me.
One thing I want to point out and I don't see it mentioned anywhere - Nicks arch support is realistic. White's uses a fairly exaggerated arch. I know it has proven to work but I feel like Nicks arch is much more realistic and easier on the feet.
