This is my first pair of Nicks

This is my first pair of Nicks. I have been interested in their boots for a while, but there are so many models, types of leathers and options that it was kind of overwhelming. I have not noticed many sales or discounts, which is how I was exposed to their PNW competitors which I really enjoy. I decided to make it easy on myself and choose a quick ship model to limit my options and lessen the lead time. I am glad I did. It was between the Troopers and these Gamebreakers which I chose because I don’t have any LTT boots. This was the first time I have purchased a pair of boots and forced myself to forget about them so I wouldn’t obsess:) the boots were completed and shipped on the short end of the lead time window and the boots were well packaged and in flawless condition. They are very sharp looking boots and the TNW last is a better fit for my feet than the HNW last and since they are LTT, I can tie them I a way to get a snug fit and avoid the bite of the shallow instep that it shares with the HNW last. The break in has been pretty harmless. The upper leather is really stiff for the first week and the pinch from the horseshoe can be painful for the first few days since it is lower down the boot where the boots bend which means that seem digs into the top of your toe joints! It gets better after a few days and it’s not to bad if you don’t over do it. There is not much of a break in to the footbed since it is a removable leather insole over a rubber foundation. The wedge and Sierra sole are very comfortable while providing the support and stability I am used to in my other all leather construction boots. The only awkward thing about this boot last is due to the toe box changes, the overall geometry of the toe box is pushed forward making for a lot more space in front of your toes than usual. It was kind of making me second guess my sizing even though the heel, arch, and ball are all well aligned. I think it’s just a mental thing I guess. They fit well and are very comfortable already and one the uppers start to break in, I have no heel slip and it was minimal even when they were stiff. I decided to put on some W&C double stuffed crimson kilties I had along with burgundy laces to give them a pop of color. I really like them! I have been really impressed with the boots and the overall experience even though it sucks to wait for them to be built:) I was impressed enough to invest in another pair during this weeks Labor Day Sale. I ordered a build your own pair of 8 inch boots in the TNW last in the Cypress #8 leather. I can’t wait to get them! I decided to drop down a full size from my brannock and a size up in width to a 9.5 E. I have done that one time before with another brand and it worked well from a fit perspective. I hope I have the same experience with my new boots and I cut into some of that dead space in front of my toes:) I guess we will see. Thanks for building really cool well built boots. I enjoy being a customer!

Excellent outdoor boot

Excellent boot for hiking. 8" height gives you more protection, support, and ability to wade through water. Padded collar is comfortable. The lace-to-toe design gives you more control over fastening, although for me is making for a more difficult break in. It also makes for a warmer boot, since you basically have two vamps with the same leather.

I chose WeatherShield brown leather for its water resistance, although this isn't a water repellent/hydrophobic leather. But between this, its very tight grain break (especially by steerhide/cowhide standards), the 360 degree stitchdown construction, full gusset, and 8" height, water resistance is excellent.

The Sierra sole is proven, a damn good one for hiking and the wedge makes it comfortable. If you want a non-LTT version of this, get the Turnbull.

Unsurpassed

Excellent all around. Well made, high quality, and a perfect hiking boot (no hunting for me) for trail and off trail bushwhacking. The lace to toe allows me to perfectly dial the fit and the sierra sole is the perfect combination of flex and traction. Big mile days are no problem in these boots. Easily the best backcountry hiking boots I have ever worn.
